The 9th International Congress on Migration Journalism in Mérida is the only congress in the world specialized in migration journalism. An annual gathering, unique of its kind on a global scale, that brings together journalists, researchers, activists, and communicators from all over the world to reflect on, debate, and improve media coverage of migration.
The International Congress on Migration Journalism has been held in Mérida for nine editions, organized by the porCausa Foundation. Each year, the congress addresses a central theme related to migration and journalism: narratives of fear, the representation of migrants in the media, border journalism, the role of AI in migration coverage, and much more.
The 9th edition of the International Congress on Migration Journalism in Mérida takes place on 15 October 2026 and has as its central theme the media coverage of migrant children and youth. More than 100 journalists from across Spain and from different countries will gather in Mérida to transform the way the media tell the stories of the children and young people who migrate or who grow up in migration contexts.
Covering migrant childhood is one of the most complex and urgent challenges in journalism today: how do you protect the identity of minors while also telling their stories? How do you avoid victimization without falling into invisibilization? Which narrative frameworks are fairer and more effective? The Congress will answer these questions through high-level talks, workshops, and debates.
